The Plymouth Tapestry
A lecture and presentation by Donna Curtin, Executive Director – Pilgrim Society and Pilgrim Hall Museum.
The Plymouth Tapestry was commissioned by Pilgrim Hall Museum to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Plymouth Colony’s founding. Elizabeth Creeden, of Plymouth, began designing the work in 2018, and volunteers began stitching the tapestry in 2019. When completed in 2028, the Tapestry will consist of twenty separate 6-foot-long scenic panels, each embroidered entirely by hand.
Donna will share how the tapestry illustrates the experiences of the Wampanoag people, and the story of the Pilgrims who arrived on the Mayflower in 1620 to establish a new home.
Through hand-stitched imagery and text, each panel represents events in the distinct yet intertwined histories of the Indigenous and European families who encountered each other in the early colony.
The needlework narrative traces their evolving stories through the 1621 harvest gathering known as “The First Thanksgiving.”
Tambour Embroidery
A demonstration and Q&A session with Alexandrina Dordea, a self-taught Romanian embroidery artist. She uses tambour embroidery, stump work, goldwork, beadwork, and punch needle techniques to create needle art that is both realistic and artistic. Alexandrina has a passion for creating intricate, textured work – her designs of flowers, fish, insects, butterflies and other creatures are exceptional.
